![]() ![]() Risk factors for epiglottitis include incomplete or lack of immunizations for Hib or immune deficiency. The median age of children with epiglottitis has increased from 3 years to 6-12 years. ![]() In the United states, prior to Hib vaccine the annual incidence rate for children under 5 years was 5 per 100,000. With the introduction of the HiB vaccine in the 1980s, not only has the incidence of the disease lessened, but also the age prevalence and the bacteriology have changed. Historically caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B, it was also a disease of children 2-7 years of age. This includes the aryepiglottic folds, arytenoid soft tissue, and, occasionally, the uvula. Epiglottitis is a form of cellulitis.Įpiglottitis is usually an infectious process of bacterial etiology directly or from bacteremia, but it can be caused by caustic ingestion, thermal injury, or direct trauma. Mine-artillery positions may be organized in coastal regions.Epiglottitis, or supraglottitis, is an inflammation of the epiglottis and/or the supraglottic tissues surrounding the epiglottis. Units and ships of the navy also take up attack positions prior to combat. During an offensive, the troops occupy and organize positions to consolidate the captured terrain. In preparing for an offensive, attack and assembly positions are organized in the area of departure for elements of motorized rifle and tank troops, as well as launching positions for the rocket troops and firing positions for artillery, mortars, and other means of fire. If there is no forward position, a combat security position is created to protect the first position of the main defense zone from surprise enemy attack and to hinder enemy reconnaissance. Moreover, dummy positions may be set up in the depth of the defense, as well as reserve and temporary positions for the maneuver of elements and means of fire in combat. To mislead the enemy concerning the actual location of the main line of resistance, a forward position may be created on several of the most important axes. They prevent the advance of the enemy and usually serve as lines of deployment for reserves before they mount a counterattack. Intermediate and switch positions may be organized in the depth of the defense. ![]() Troops also prepare firing positions for machine guns, artillery, mortars, antitank guided missiles, tanks, self-propelled gunmounts, and other means of fire, as well as launching positions for the rocket forces. This provides concealment of the disposition of the men and the means of fire at the position, protection from enemy fire, and better opportunities for maneuvering along the front and in depth. Each position is equipped with foxholes, bunkers, covers, and if there is time, fire trenches that can be linked by communication trenches. The main element of every position is usually the defense areas or strongpoints of the defending elements connected by a unified system of fire and obstacles. Positions are, as a rule, set up by the engineers and form an integral part of deeply echeloned defense zones, in which they are distributed in a definite order along the front and in depth. Numerous other positions are formed from the basic one.Ī zone, or sector, of the terrain that troops are occupying or are preparing to occupy. This can be an effective way to help you conserve your data so that you don’t completely run out. ![]() If you pay for a set amount of data per month, your ISP may begin to throttle your internet as you approach that cut-off point. By restricting individuals’ bandwidth, more people can use the internet service at the same time-just with slower loading speeds. That results in network congestion, which some ISPs combat through internet throttling. For example, if you’re sitting down to watch a Netflix movie around 8 p.m., there is a good chance many of your neighbors have the same idea. You may notice symptoms of internet throttling at certain times of day, but not at others. Internet throttling is most common with mobile and wireless ISPs. This, in turn, can allow ISPs to minimize network congestion or charge more for the privileges of higher bandwidth. Internet service providers may intentionally slow down customers’ service to limit the total amount of bandwidth consumed. The exception is if your ISP falsely advertised unlimited data but went on to place a cap on your service. But, when you’re paying for the internet with a certain expectation of internet speed, it can be disappointing to suspect your internet is getting throttled.Īlso known as data throttling or bandwidth throttling, internet throttling is legal if your ISP expresses the possibility of limiting your internet speed in the fine print of your contract. This could be due to your ISP subtly capping your bandwidth in an effort to conserve the company’s network traffic. Signs of internet throttling can also show up if you notice more buffering while streaming shows or experience lags while downloading files. If you’ve ruled out other reasons for a slow internet connection, such as trouble with your router, the issue may be internet throttling from your internet service provider (ISP). More than a frustrating feeling, this can be a legitimate problem for remote workers. Picture this: You sit down to work, only to have the internet refuse to load all of your web pages. Most of it is simply fantastical, sometimes vaguely inspired by descriptions in the Homeric epics, and much is anachronistic stuff from later periods, like the pseudo- Argive shields carried by most of the game’s heroes. As I’ve written in an earlier article, the armour of these supposed Mycenaeans is all over the place, and very little of it seems to be based on evidence from the Bronze Age. Still, as you move around on the map, the black-figure fog lifts and the world of the “Mycenaean” Bronze Age emerges. As I have stated many times by now, the Homeric epics contain little to no useful information about the Bronze Age. Unfortunately, Creative Assembly has opted for a Mycenaean interpretation of the Trojan War. That way, you avoid having to make any bold claims about historicity. If I were a developer working on a game about the Trojan War, I’d frame it as a story being told in the (later) sixth century BC, and I’d use an art style inspired by black-figure pottery. I like the art style that they picked for the interface and the game’s fog-of-war, inspired as it is by Greek black-figure pottery of the sixth century BC. What I do like about the game is it’s presentation. It’s also the reason why this emphatically is not a review of the game, but instead some general thoughts and commentary. That is no doubt a failing on my part, but I get bored going through the motions, amassing a force large enough to capture this or that city so that I can accumulate the necessary resources to recruit a better army that will take me to the next step, and so on. Much to my own surprise, I have found this terribly dull. In many ways, the Trojan War is simply a prop for this game (see also Joshua Hall’s relatively recent Wolfson Ancient Warfare Wednesday talk). The game focuses not so much on the war, but on preparing for the fight. But in the game, you start out as either a Greek or Trojan leader, and you have to conquer or ally a sufficiently large number of rivals to be strong enough to win the game. The Trojan War is a story where a more or less united Greek force fights the Trojans and their allies. The second reason is that the theme of the game – the Trojan War – is a poor fit with the Total War formula. I would have preferred they either framed the game entirely using the black-figure aesthetic, or went with straight-up fantasy, rather than this incongruous mess. ![]() The equipment of the warriors within the game, as showcased by Agamemnon here (foreground, left), is an anachronistic mess of stuff from different periods, slathered in fantasy. The game looks gorgeous, especially the black-figure aesthetic. The only game in the series that came close to the original, as far as I am concerned, was the Shogun sequel from 2011, which is arguably the best of the more recent crop of Total War games. The strategic layer was too complex for what it needed to be, and as developer Creative Assembly pumped out one game after another, the real-time battles lost whatever magic they may have had back in Shogun: Total War. With Rome: Total War (2004), the series introduced a much more detailed turn-based strategic layer, but I never felt it added anything worthwhile to the formula. It was a fairly simple yet elegant game, with evocative art and music. Released in 2000 and set during Japan’s Sengoku period, the strategic layer was a simple map, sort of like the boardgame Risk, and the real-time battles used sprites in order to render hundreds of troops. The first game in the series was Shogun: Total War. The battles themselves are real-time, with you deploying your troops before hitting the attack button, and then issuing commands to your troops in an attempt to kill off enough of the enemy so that they break and rout. When your army meets a rival army, you can choose to control the army directly on the battlefield. In case you haven’t played any of the previous entries in the series, Total War games are large-scale or “grand” strategy games where you spend most of your time playing in a turn-based layer similar to Civilization, where you build up cities to recruit bigger and better armies to conquer more cities so you can build even bigger and even better armies. ![]() The first reason is that I have come to realize that I don’t care much about the Total War games any more. There are two main reasons for why I’m done with the game and have no desire to continue playing it. I haven’t played enough of A Total War Saga: Troy (2020) to give you an honest appraisal about the game itself, or even if it’s worth your time. Let me start by saying that this is definitely not a review. This article was originally published on the defunct Ancient World Magazine website and is now re-published here. ![]() Removal of this cis-regulatory element effectively uncouples PIN transcription from the CRF-dependent regulation and attenuates plant cytokinin sensitivity. Here we show that the cytokinin response factors (CRFs) 21 transcriptionally control PIN-FORMED ( PIN) genes encoding auxin transporters at a specific PIN CYTOKININ RESPONSE ELEMENT ( PCRE) domain.
